Episode 29: Fact or Fiction: The Outdoor Building Code Game Show! 🛠️🏡

Welcome back to another episode of How To Handyma'am!

This week, we're putting our building code knowledge to the test with a game of Fact or Fiction: Outdoor Building Code Edition!

Emily challenged Samantha and Arly with a series of common code questions covering everything from decks and fences to stairs and outdoor safety. Some answers were exactly what you'd expect...while others exposed a few of the biggest misconceptions we see on social media and in DIY projects every day.

Whether you're planning an outdoor renovation or simply curious about why building codes exist, this episode is packed with practical information—and plenty of laughs along the way.

Tune in on Spotify or Apple Podcasts now!

Here is a breakdown of what we discussed this week:

A Dedication to Ellah ❤️

This week's episode is dedicated to Ellah, our amazing "shop elf."

Although she's still in high school, Ellah has become an invaluable member of the How To Handyma'am team. From helping prepare the shop for classes to volunteering for dump runs (yes, she actually enjoys them!), her work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to help inspire all of us every day.

Ellah reminds us that you don't have to wait until you're older to make a meaningful impact. Hard work, kindness, and a great attitude go a long way.

Our challenge this week? Be a little more like Ellah. Show up, work hard, and look for ways to help the people around you.

Fact or Fiction: Outdoor Code Edition

This week's game was simple:

Emily presented a series of outdoor building code statements, and Samantha and Arly had to decide whether each one was Fact or Fiction before learning the real answer.

It turned into a surprisingly competitive battle—and proved that even experienced contractors can second-guess themselves when building codes get involved.

Building Codes Exist for a Reason

One of the biggest themes throughout the episode was that building codes aren't designed to make projects more difficult—they're designed to make them safer.

We discussed why certain requirements exist, including topics like:

  • Deck footings and frost depth.

  • Stair safety.

  • Deck construction.

  • Fence regulations.

  • Outdoor structures and common code requirements.

Understanding why a rule exists often makes it much easier to remember.

Not Every Rule Applies Everywhere

One of the most important reminders from this episode was that building codes vary by location.

Requirements can change depending on:

  • Your state.

  • Your municipality.

  • Local amendments to the building code.

  • Whether your project requires permits.

That's why it's always worth checking with your local building department before starting a project instead of relying solely on advice you find online.

Social Media Isn't a Building Inspector

Throughout the game, we laughed about some of the comments we've received online whenever we talk about code requirements.

The reality is that building advice on the internet is often shared without considering local regulations, climate, or project-specific details.

Just because a project worked somewhere else doesn't necessarily mean it's code-compliant where you live.

When in doubt, trust your local code officials over the comment section.

Learning Through Games Makes It Stick

One of our favorite parts of this episode was seeing how much easier it is to remember building code when you're having fun.

Turning code questions into a game sparked great conversations about why certain rules exist, cleared up common misconceptions, and proved that learning doesn't have to feel like studying for an exam.

Who says building code can't be entertaining?

Our Biggest Takeaway

Building codes can seem intimidating at first, but they're really just a collection of lessons learned over time to help keep homes safe and durable.

Whether you're building a deck, installing stairs, or putting up a fence, taking a few minutes to understand the rules before you begin can save you time, money, and headaches later on.

And if you enjoyed testing your own knowledge along with us, let us know! We'd love to bring back another round of Fact or Fiction covering even more DIY myths and building code questions in a future episode.
