Ep 27: DIY Judgment Day: The Internet Hacks That Are Accidentally Ruining Your House ⚖️🛠️

Welcome back to another episode of How To Handyma'am!

This week, we put some of the internet's most popular DIY hacks on trial. Inspired by all the renovation "tips" flooding social media, we played judge and jury, deciding whether each hack was Guilty, Not Guilty, or deserved a No Contest verdict.

Some hacks turned out to be surprisingly practical. Others? Straight to DIY jail.

If you've ever wondered whether that viral home improvement trick is actually worth trying, this episode is for you.

Here is a breakdown of what we discussed this week:

A Dedication to Pam ❤️

This week's episode is dedicated to Pam, one of Emily's oldest friends and one of the podcast's biggest supporters since day one.

Although they don't get to see each other often, every reunion feels like no time has passed. Emily reflected on how special it is to have friendships that can survive years, distance, and life's many changes without missing a beat.

Our challenge this week? Be like Pam—show up for the people you care about, even if life gets busy.

DIY Judgment Day Is in Session ⚖️

For this episode, we turned the courtroom into a construction site.

Each viral DIY hack was given one of three verdicts:

  • Not Guilty – We'd actually recommend it.

  • Guilty – Skip this one.

  • No Contest – It depends on the project, your budget, or personal preference.

As it turns out, not every internet hack deserves the hype.

Cabinet Painting Without Sanding? Guilty.

One of the first hacks on trial was painting kitchen cabinets without sanding or priming.

While shortcuts are tempting, proper preparation is what gives painted cabinets their durability. Skipping prep work often leads to chipping, scratching, and finishes that simply don't last.

Sometimes the boring steps are the most important ones.

Some Budget-Friendly Hacks Actually Hold Up

Not every trend earned a guilty verdict.

We talked about projects like:

  • Refinishing tubs with epoxy products.

  • Turning an old dresser into a bathroom vanity.

  • Creative furniture makeovers that give secondhand finds a new life.

The common theme?

If you use the right products and understand the limitations, some budget-friendly DIYs can be a great alternative to a full renovation.

The Hacks We'd Rather You Skip

Of course, a few internet trends had us shaking our heads.

Some of the biggest offenders included:

  • Drawing fake shiplap lines on walls with a Sharpie.

  • Stretching rubber bands across paint cans instead of using proper painting techniques.

  • Gluing trim to walls without also securing it mechanically.

  • Pouring boiling water down drains to "fix" grease clogs instead of preventing grease buildup in the first place.

Just because something goes viral doesn't mean it's good building practice.

Sometimes the Answer Is… "It Depends"

One of our favorite parts of this episode was realizing that many DIY questions don't have a simple yes-or-no answer.

The success of a project often depends on:

  • Proper surface preparation.

  • Choosing the correct materials.

  • Understanding the long-term maintenance involved.

  • Knowing whether you're making a cosmetic improvement or a permanent repair.

There's a big difference between a clever shortcut and creating a bigger problem for your future self.

DIY Should Save You Money—Not Create More Repairs

Throughout the episode, we kept coming back to one idea:

A good DIY project isn't just inexpensive—it's built to last.

It's easy to get caught up in satisfying before-and-after videos online, but taking a little extra time to prep surfaces, use quality materials, and follow proven methods usually produces much better results than chasing the latest trend.

Our Biggest Takeaway

Not every DIY hack deserves a guilty verdict—but not every viral video deserves your trust, either.

When you're planning a project, ask yourself whether the shortcut actually improves the process or simply skips an important step. A little extra effort today can save you time, money, and frustration down the road.

Have a DIY hack you've seen online and wondered if it's actually a good idea? Send it our way! It might just end up on the next edition of DIY Judgment Day.
